Intermediate and advanced players looking for easy power and big spin should love the 2018 version of the Pure Drive Plus. At 27.5″ long, this stick packs more of a punch than the standard length Pure Drive, making it dangerous in the hands of an aggressive baseliner. For this update, Babolat retools the stringbed with FSI Power Technology, which includes diamond shaped grommet holes and wider string spacing. The upshot is bigger power and more spin-potential. Babolat also updates its Cortex dampening system with a viscoelastic rubber material for a more muted and comfortable feel. From the baseline, the Pure Drive Plus swings easy for an extended length racquet, making it great for cranking winners on the run or re-setting the point with a quick flick to the back court. Thanks to the more open string pattern, spin comes very easy, and the ball leaves the stringbed at a higher trajectory (think easy depth). Topspin players looking to hit high arching balls that drop hard and explode off the court should have a blast with this stick. At net the Pure Drive + is not only deft enough for heated exchanges, but it will give you enough pop to finish points with authority. The extended length makes this stick dangerous on serves where you’ll find very easy access to power. Although this racquet doesn’t come around quite as easily as the standard Pure Drive, experienced players will find enough speed to take big, aggressive cuts on service returns. Offering a tad more comfort, spin and pop than the previous version, the 2018 Pure Drive Plus remains a very solid option for intermediate and advanced players.
